SRD R370 Grant Eligibility Criteria 2025

The South African government announced in the 2025-26 budget report that we have allocated R35.2 billion for the SRD R370 grant. The announcement was made by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana during the budget speech in Parliament.

However, to maintain the quality and fair disbursement of SRD payments, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has to implement strict qualification criteria. The government wants to make sure that only qualified and deserving people get the grant aid. So that is why the eligibility criteria are announced for the applicants of the SRD grant.

If you are willing to apply for the SRD grant, it is mandatory to check the eligibility rules of the grant. Let’s find out the terms and conditions for the approval of the SASSA SRD grant.

To see where your own application stands, check your status at srd.sassa.gov.za (opens in a new tab). Your payment date shows on the same result page.

SRD R370 Grant Eligibility Criteria

The South African government has set rules for people who want the SRD R370 grant. These rules help SASSA decide who should get the money. Each applicant must meet these requirements.

1. Age Limit

You must be between 18 and 59 years old. SASSA does not approve applications from people younger or older than this age group.

2. Citizenship Status

You must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, refugee, asylum seeker, or hold a valid special permit. SASSA verifies your legal status before approving the grant.

3. Income Limit

Your income must be below R624 per month. If you earn more, your application will not be approved.

4. Not Receiving Other Government Grants

You must not get another social grant for yourself, such as the old-age or disability grant. A child support grant you receive on behalf of a child is a different case — check your own status at srd.sassa.gov.za rather than assuming you are blocked.

5. Not Registered for UIF or NSFAS

You must not receive Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) payments or funding from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). These funds disqualify you from the SRD grant.

6. No Formal Employment

You should not have any formal job or regular work. SASSA checks your employment status during the verification process.

7. Valid Contact Number

You must use a working mobile number. SASSA uses this number to send updates about your application.

8. Consent for Data Use

You must agree to let SASSA check your data with other departments. Without your permission, your application will not go through.

What Happens After You Apply?

After you apply, SASSA starts checking your details. They match your info with other government databases like Home Affairs and SARS.

This check helps confirm your identity and income status. If your application is approved, you will get an SMS from SASSA. It tells you when and how to collect your R370 grant.

If your application is rejected, SASSA tells you the reason. Appeals do not go to SASSA. Lodge yours at srd.dsd.gov.za/appeals with your ID number, your phone number and the OTP. Do it within 30 days, and never later than 90 days, and lodge a separate appeal for every month that was declined. Always keep your phone number active to get updates on your application status.

F.A.Q

Can I apply for the SRD R370 grant if I already get a child support grant?

A child support grant is paid for the child, not for you. Apply and let SASSA decide on your own status at srd.sassa.gov.za.

Do I have to reapply for the SRD grant every few months?

You do not confirm your eligibility on a three-month cycle. SASSA checks it for you every month, so check your status each month to see that month’s outcome.

What if I change my phone number after applying?

You should update your phone number on the SASSA portal to keep receiving updates.

Can I apply if I am currently studying?

Yes, but if you receive NSFAS support, you are not eligible.

How do I know my application status?

You can check your status at srd.sassa.gov.za using your ID and phone number.
