How to Apply for the SRD Grant Reapplication?

SASSA uses a means test to check eligibility for most grants. If we talk about the SRD grant then SASSA strictly deploys the eligibility rules to those who want to get the R370 monthly payment. If the term “SASSA reapplication” is new to you, it simply means updating your existing SRD application when SASSA asks you to. It used to run on a three-month cycle, but that ended in April 2024.

This method is designed to keep a record of grant beneficiaries so SASSA can see if they are still qualified for the grant. Until April 2024, SASSA made SRD beneficiaries reapply every three months. That rule is gone. SASSA now rechecks you automatically each month against Home Affairs, SARS, UIF and bank records, so you do not reapply on a timetable. You update your application only when your status asks you to, or when your own details change.

If you have checked your SASSA status and you see that you are required to submit the SRD reapplication, then this guide will help you for sure.

How to Apply for the SRD Grant Reapplication?

SASSA no longer puts every SRD recipient on a three-month reapplication cycle. You use this process when your status says “Reapplication Needed”, or when something in your details has changed. If you see that message, follow these steps.

Step 1: Open a Secure Web Browser

Use a secure browser like Chrome, Firefox, or Safari. Make sure your internet connection is safe. This protects your personal details.

Step 2: Visit the SRD Grant Portal

Go to https://srd.sassa.gov.za (opens in a new tab). This is the official website for SRD reapplications.

Step 3: Click “Update Application”

On the top right corner of the website, you will see the menu bar. Click on it and then find “Update Application” so open it.  You will be taken to a new page where you need to reapply.

Step 4: Enter Your ID and Phone Number

Type your South African ID number and the phone number you used to apply for.

Then click the “Send SMS” button.

Step 5: Enter the OTP Code

You will get an SMS with a One-Time PIN (OTP). Enter this code on the website to continue.

Step 6: Fill Out the Reapplication Form

Once verified, you will see the reapplication form. Fill in these details:

  • Full Name
  • Surname
  • Email address
  • ID Number

Step 7: Select the Month

Choose the current month for which you want to reapply. Click Apply to finish the process.

How to Check Your SRD Reapplication Status

After you reapply, check your status to see if SASSA approved it. Here is how to do that:

  1. Go to https://srd.sassa.gov.za (opens in a new tab)
  2. Click “Check Application Status” on the top menu.
  3. Enter your ID number and phone number.
  4. Click submit. Your reapplication status will appear on the screen.

It is a good idea to check your status every week. If SASSA updates anything or changes your status, you will see it here.

Common Reapplication Outcomes and What They Mean

Here are the three main results you can get after reapplying:

1. Reapplication Pending

This means your application was received but has not yet been reviewed. You should wait a few days and check again. The status means that SASSA is still processing your request.

2. Reapplication Approved

When SASSA approves your reapplication then your status will show as approved. You will get the R370 payment for that month. You can now check your payment date online.

3. Reapplication Declined

A declined status means that your reapplication is not approved by SASSA. This can happen for many reasons, such as:

  • You have income above the means test limit
  • You gave incorrect information
  • You are already receiving another type of grant

If you think it is a mistake, appeal at srd.dsd.gov.za/appeals. Do it within 30 days of the decline, and never later than 90 days. Appeal each declined month on its own, or that month’s decision stands. You log in with your ID number, your phone number and an OTP.

F.A.Q

Why does SASSA use reapplication?

Reapplication is very necessary because circumstances could change over time. A person who is eligible for SRD payment can be ineligible in the future.

Is there still a 3-month reapplication window?

No. That window ended in April 2024. SASSA now checks your eligibility every month on its own. Keep checking your status each month, because approval is given one month at a time.

Do I need to re-register from scratch every time?

No, just update the required information through reapplication.

Is the R370 grant amount fixed?

Yes, as of now, the monthly payment is R370 for approved applicants.

What is the maximum period of SRD grant payment for one beneficiary?

There is no three-month limit. You can be paid month after month for as long as you keep passing the monthly check. SASSA judges each month on its own, so you can be approved one month and declined the next.
