SASSA Black Debit Card for SRD Grant Beneficiaries

One of the easiest ways to withdraw the SASSA SRD grant payment is to use the SASSA debit card. However, the old SASSA Gold debit card is no longer active as the new SASSA Black card is on the market. Now you can perform a SASSA status check and get your payment date to withdraw your money from an ATM using the new Black debit card.

What is the SASSA Black Debit Card?

The SASSA Black card is a new and improved SASSA debit card for grant beneficiaries. It is an updated version of the SASSA Gold card. The purpose of this new card is to enhance the security and privacy of the grant payment system.

Gold cards were switched off on 2 September 2026. The deadline to swap was 31 August 2026 and it was not extended.

If you still have a gold card it will decline everywhere, but your grant is still being paid into your account. You just need to collect the Black Card to reach it, and you can still do that now.

The swap has been running since 2025. More than 1.8 million beneficiaries have already moved across. Anyone left on a gold card is now locked out of their own money until they collect the new one.

Why the Gold Card Was Replaced

The old card system had a security problem that could not be patched, so every card had to be reissued. The Black Card uses stronger encryption and better fraud protection.

The card works at ATMs and in shops. You can use it to check your balance and withdraw cash, and you can get payment alerts on your phone.

How to Get the SASSA Black Card

What to Take With You

Only one thing: your South African ID, or a temporary ID if you do not have the green book or smart card with you.

You do not need proof of address. You do not need a SIM card in your name. You do not need an email address. You do not need to bring the old gold card. If anyone tells you otherwise, they are wrong.

Where to Go

Dial *120*355# on your phone to find the nearest replacement site, or call Postbank on 0800 53 54 55 and ask for the sites in your province.

Sites are set up inside Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer and SPAR stores that have a Postbank point. There are more than 300 of them around the country.

What Happens There

  1. Join the queue at the Postbank point and say you are there to replace a gold card.
  2. Hand over your ID. The clerk checks it against the SASSA record.
  3. The card is printed there and then. You do not go home and wait for it in the post.
  4. You set your own PIN before you leave.
  5. The card is free. Nobody should ask you for money.

Your grant money is already sitting in the account. Once the new card is active you can draw it in the normal way.

Activate Your New SASSA Black Grant Payment Card

In most cases the card is already active by the time you walk out, because you set the PIN at the counter. If it is not, you can activate it at an ATM or by calling the helpline.

1. Activate at an ATM

You can go to any ATM that supports SASSA or Postbank cards. Follow these steps:

  1. Insert your new SASSA Black card into the ATM.
  2. Enter the PIN you set at the counter.
  3. If the ATM asks you to change it, choose a new 4-digit PIN you can remember.
  4. Confirm your new PIN.
  5. Your card is now active and ready to use.

Make sure you do not share your new PIN with anyone.

2. Activate by Phone Call

You can also activate your card by calling the Postbank helpline. Here’s how:

  1. Call the Postbank Customer Care number: 0800 53 54 55 (toll-free).
  2. Choose the option for “Card Services.”
  3. Speak to a support agent and ask to activate your SASSA Black card.
  4. Provide your ID number and card details.
  5. The agent will verify your identity.
  6. Once verified, your card will be activated.

You can now use your card to withdraw your grant or check your balance.
